Why are Argentinians less likely to be hurt by big blows than by smaller ones?

In "Beasts in My Bed", Jacquie Durrell quoted Gerald Durrell, the noted British naturalist and writer, who said, with regard to a car accident he encountered in Buenos Aires, that "Argentinians are like Greeks: the harder you hit them, the less injured they will be." What is the medical reason of this strange phenomenon?
