How about this that my grandma wrote in my autograph book many years ago;-

'If this book should chance to roam, Box its ears and send it home, If its ears you cannot find, Put it down and never mind'.

Write "Happy Birthday  friend's name"  Date & year.  Some of my books were given to me by my father and the only thing he wrote was my name and Christmas year.

    Never write in a book.

Put a note inside, on a special notelet, but it's a really bad idea to deface the book itself.

    Happy Birthday, [Friend's Name]!

I hope you'll enjoy this book.

    [Your Name]

    [Date]

You can tell your friend why you thought she'd like the book, just don't give away the ending.

Don't scribble all over a book you didn't write. Happy Birthday, Date, with my love, Me.
