Follow the money. It's not a new idea. It's just how most measure success.

In America it was usually a pyramid society (large landowners, aristocrats, and clergy at top, then professional men, yeomen farmers, lesser tradesmen, and hired help in that order, then indentured servants and women, and finally slaves; Native Americans not included)

Societies were organized into Kingdoms.  France ruled over a lot of these at the beginning of the century, but got a beatdown from the rest of Europe.
