Absolutely! My name is Rachael, and I don't typically go by Ray but I know people who do.

I also have a friend named Jessica Rae and she goes by Rae - I think when girls go by "Ray," they typically spell it "Rae."

All in all, it's certainly a possibility.

    For a nick name,

Ray - For a boy name

Rey - For a girl name (like in StarWars)

It really doesn't matter because names change over time. 20yrs ago you rarely hear a girl named Charlie, that was a guys name. I know at least 4 little girls or baby girls named Charlie. So what is common or fashionable now will change later.
