Why aren’t very many Americans of Australian descent?

well it has to do with timing of colonization. America was colonized before Australia and even then, Australia was used as a prison colony for some time. It wasn't until about 1900 that it became a nation in its own right. by that time, America was pretty well settled by europeans. most of my ancestors came over between 1800-1880.
as for aboriginal Australians, they didn't want to leave australia for the most part and they were discriminated against pretty hard and couldn't leave if they want to later on.
