There are many books and websites about Titanic that will answer your questions. The Astors were on the side of the ship loaded by 2nd Officer Lightoller, whose policy was "women and children only". He allowed only one male passenger board a lifeboat (and he had to climb down to it via a rope) because it had only one seaman and the passenger was a yachtsman. J.J. Astor asked to go with his pregnant wife. Had Mrs. Astor been assisted into boat 6 instead of waiting for boat 4, Col. Astor, a yachtsman himself, might have been the man who climbed down that rope, instead of the man who did.

Most of the other male 1st class survivors were on the side of the ship loaded by 1st Officer Murdoch. His policy was "women and children first. Husbands allowed if their wives won't go without them.

There were at least 2 males from 1st class rescued from upturned Collapsable boat B, 2 or 3 1st class men who jumped into Boat 13 when it was in the sea, 1 picked up by a boat he swam toward.

According to legend originating from word-of-mouth claims by survivors, when Astor's turn came up he gave up his place to other passengers.

He didn't attempt to get on a lifeboat.

maybe he chose to go down with the ship and give other men a chance. or he could have been hurt or killed.
