What is the culture of St. Louis like?

I'm writing a novel set in the St. Louis suburbs, specifically St. Louis County near University City. If anyone from the metro area has any insights about the culture I'd appreciate it. Specifically how liberal/conservative it is, and whether there is a significant amount of Southern culture in St. Louis since it's in Missouri.

It's usually better to write about someplace you know. You can't just lump Missouri or St. Louis in with the South. A real author would go there, talk to people, and find out things that are integral to the area.

You may get better answers of you write "West St Louis" in the lead sentence.

Yes, I know. There is no West St Louis, unless one lives there and is speaking about St Louis to an outsider.

    You'll see.
