Why is Ted Cruz defending Trump after all the lies and insults Trump hurled at him in 2016?

I'm sure Cruz hates him with a passion.

He would probably lose support from Republicans if he didn't defend Trump.

Christians do not hate. Politicians lie. Those are the pertinent facts.

What is the only good things about Donald Trump's entry into the political realm is that it seems to have really destroyed Ted Cruz's political career. Of course, Cruz is going to be in the senate for at least five more years, but his star really seems to faded. Before Trump entered the race, Cruz was a rising star in the party and was seen as someone who would probably run for president one day. I think Trump has ended that.

What you got to realize about Cruz is that he's a man in many ways of very low principles. Instead, he's interested in what will benefit him. You point out that Ted Cruz was critical Trump during the primary and this is true, but it came relatively late in the process. For most of the primary he refused criticized Trump. Like many Republicans he made the, ultimately incorrect, judgment that Trump's candidacy would collapse on its own and what it did he wanted to be ready to scoop up Trump supporters for himself. So for a long time he refrained from criticizing Trump. This set him apart from other candidates in the race who were attacking the front runner. But when Trump started going after him in very personal fashion he changed his tune and began vociferously criticizing him. This culminated in perhaps the finest moment of Ted Cruz career when he gave speech at the Republican National Convention where he told Republicans to vote their conscience. But, Ted Cruz soon learned that his political fortunes didn't lie in opposing Trump. He had gotten criticism from his constituents and soon returned to the party fold. There's a great picture of him during the general election glumly sitting at a phone bank making phone calls for Trump. Since then, like other Republicans, he has toed the line for Trump. That means defending him zealously.

Unlike liberals we conservatives don't care about petulant insults, well we at least we forgive.

Because Cruz believes it to be in the best interests of his career to do so.

Maybe Cruz is mature enough to understand it was all part of running for President, and he's willing to work with Trump now.

He cares only about politicking; not honor and integrity.

Because Ted Cruz is a political chameleon with no permanent skeleton and the ability to take any shape the particular moment requires.

He is a typical Republican. He knows that Trump has the support of 80% of Republican voters, so he dares not make Trump and the Republican voters angry. If there is a secret ballot on impeachment, most Republican senators would vote to convict him.
