How does dystonia kill people?

Carol Spinney recently died of this mysterious disease. He was fine last summer, so how did he pass away all of a sudden?

Also, how do most people get this disease?

Overactivity in several areas of the brain--the basal ganglia, thalamus and cerebral cortex----seems to cause  dystonia.. Most chronic dystonia has a genetic origin. Dystonia that isn't genetic in origin  can be caused by a severe lack of oxygen to the brain either at birth or later in life. Dystonia can also be caused by Wilson's disease ( a hereditary condition), certain metal poisons, and stroke. Sometimes dystonia can be an unusual reaction to antipsychotic drugs. In these cases, prompt administration of diphenhydramine by injection or by capsule usually stops the episode quickly.
