Why do I have random jolts of pain in my head?

I keep getting jolts of pain on the right side of my head. They're there for maybe about 2 seconds, then go away. The pain is pretty bad and it's been happening a lot in the past two weeks. Why is this happening? Should I tell my doctor?

this sometimes happens to me - it could be tension on side of head from bad posture or head staying in same place for long time. is it like a pulse in your head?
