Why did Napoleon invade Egypt ?

I hear he did only to imitate Alexander the Great since he admired him so much.

One of his great mistakes caused by his towering ego. He went there and dragged the French nation there only because the 'Greats' of history had (2000 years before). He dared act as a 'demigod and Alexander'. Vanity and self love caused him to lose the French fleet at the 'battle of the Nile" and the oceans passed forever to Britain and not France.

Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, Pompey, those were his idols, wanted to be impressive and ambitious.
