What does this quote mean? “Don’t play the saxophone, let it play you” by Charlie Parker. Thanks ?

It means to not approach playing the saxophone thinking "I should do this, then that." Instead, let the instrument express what you feel inside.

For example, when you meet someone new, you don't want to be thinking "I should walk up to him, shake his hand and look into his eyes". Instead, you think "There's the guy I've been wanting to talk to" and let your body do it's thing automatically. The same goes for music. Learn/feel/play. Don't omit the "feel" part.

He's trying to say that music comes from the person, not the instrument. Express yourself from within and let the instrument reflect your emotions
