Are local newspapers closing down a lot, especially if conservative or Christian, or is it just part of the times like books being less used?

Its a nationwide phenomenon going on for a couple decades, accelerated by the internet and large mergers of newspapers into one.

    For many years

newspapers have not taken advantage of their natural role to provide more in depth coverage than is available in short sound bite on television.

Unfortunate real reporting is so rare that the papers appear nothing more than someone typing out those same sound bites so you can read them a day late. This is not a compelling reason to keep paying for print media in a digital age.

Give me value for my 50 cents as I have no bird cage to line.

In retrospect , Social Media has spread like  a virus for ignorance.

You don't need to think about ,or critically examine, the latest  "belief" being circulated ,you can just mindlessly join in with whichever flock that attracts you .

Reading beyond that is almost beyond most people now .

Back in the day, Newspapers would pay hundreds of reporter's salaries all around the globe.  Now any idiot with a phone can report.  Who needs a newspaper?
