Self service buffet or not, why not still leave a tip ?

Funny how people always leave a tip for the waiter/waitress

and not the chef who cooked the food.

I do tip for the waitress who takes away the dirty plates and refills our drinks, but at a reduced rate since there is less personal service.  For full service I tip 15% for mediocre service and 20% for exceptional service.  For our local buffet I usually just tip $4 on a $27 bill which comes to 14.8%.

Nope.  The COOK is not providing any personal service and makes at least the minimum wage.  Waitresses are paid an hourly wage far below the minimum wage with the expectation that they would make it up on tips.
