Which one would give best support to use for a load-bearing beam?

#2 Prime Kiln Dried Southern Yellow Pine Lumber OR #2 Prime Ground Contact Pressure-Treated Lumber

Any pros and cons?

    I would use the kiln dried lumber. You will get less shrinkage or warping from dry lumber. Most pressure treated lumber has a higher moisture content and is not necessary unless it is used for a sill plate or an area that has a very high likelihood of a termite infestations.

    i would use neither ..unless you are using an engineered  beam...either a re-enforced concrete lintol or a steel beam is standard in uk ..for normal timber head to texas ..home of the cowboys

    pressure treated is for outdoor or damp area use. strength is equal

  • if the beam will be outside exposed to the elements than use the pressure treated, if the beam will be indoors than use the other
