Let the hourly rate be \$x

so, 40 hours => \$40x

Overtime 8 hours => \$8(1.5x) = \$12x

Total => 40x + 12x = 52x

Hence, 52x = 884

i.e. x = 884/52 => \$17/hour

Jim worked 40 regular hours last week,

plus 8 overtime hours at the time-and-a-half rate.

His gross pay was \$884.

40x + 1.5(8x) = \$884

52x = \$884

x = \$17

His hourly rate was \$17.00

He got paid for 40 hrs plus (8 * 1.5) hr.  That's 40 + 12 or 52 hr.

He got paid \$884 for 52  hrs.  So 884/52 is his hourly rate.
