Are the Cowboys the first team to be essentially eliminated from playoff contention while leading the division in week 13?

They're not out yet.  Granted, they're not doing well at the moment, but SOMEBODY has to win their division.

They aren't eliminated. The winner of the division makes the playoffs even if they have a losing record.

The Redskins may be the first team to have only 3 wins after 12 games and still be in contention to win the division, they're only 2 games out of first place.

If they somehow win their division, they still make the playoffs.

No, if they win the division they are in the playoffs no matter what their record is, but they, or someone else in their division, could become the team with the worst won/lose record in NFL history to make the playoffs.

No, because if they win their division they will make the playoffs.

No, at the rate they're going, they'll limp into the playoffs and then be defeated in their first game.

Not really.  As a division leader, they automatically make it into the playoffs.  There have been teams that made the playoffs with a losing record.

Sorry, wasn't trying to refute it.  Just to give the details.
In case anyone either doubted it had ever happened, or thought it was common.
