A woman of mass 45 kg jumps off the bow of an 80 kg canoe that is initially at rest.?

If her velocity is 3.5 m/s to the right, what

is the velocity of the canoe after she jumps?

    Given,

    Mass of woman (m₁) = 45kg

    Mass of canoe (m₂) = 80kg

    Velocity of woman (v₁) = 3.5m/sec

    Velocity of canoe (v₂) = ?

    Using conservation of momentum:-

    m₁v₁ = m₂v₂

    = v₂ = m₁v₁/m₂ = 45kg x 3.5m/sec / 80kg

    = 1.968m/sec ≈ 1.97m/sec

    ∴ velocity of canoe (v₁) = 1.97m/sec.

    Balance the momentum.

    45*3.5=80 v.

    v=45*3.5/80=1.97 m/s

    Mass * speed = mass * speed.
