What's the point with ''step family''?

Like my father married some lady and her daughters are called my ''step sisters'. They're definitely not my sister. We're not even related.

The term "step" in this context comes from the Latin-Old English where it actually meant something more like "orphan". But this was back at a time when divorce was rare and most marriages ended with the death of a spouse.

It's a legal term that helps to define this situation. Yes, they are not biologically related to you, but they are legally related to you because your father married their mother.
