Isnt an area rung redundant?

Every rug has to have area...  Its impossible to buy a rug with no area... So why add the area in front, no need...

Measure the area to be covered by a rug, buy an area rug to fit. Pretty simple. Not worthy of satire.

"Area rug" is a decorating / design term that has come into vogue along with open plan great room housing designs.  A dining space may be defined by the 'area rug' that the table and chairs rests on.  A couch, coffee table, and side chairs may form a conversation area defined by the rug the furniture grouping that sits on. Granted the term is wordy ad-speak by floor covering purveyors, but what is sold in today's market without wordy ad-speak?

The area that the rug is placed...doesn't all get covered...LIKE WALL TO WALL CARPETING does. So...no. Area rug is a perfect description.
