When using gusta vs gustan, what happens when a verb directly follows gustar? Example: "Me gusta comer frutas" or "Me gustan comer frutas".?

     Me gusta comer frutas.  Me gustan las frutas

    It might help you to think of "me gusta" as "it pleases me." Then it is easier to see that you would use the singular form of the verb in that sentence: "me gusta comer frutas" = "IT pleases me to eat fruit[s]."

    gustar = to be pleasing to

    "I like fruits" becomes "fruits are pleasing to me:  Me gustan las frutas.

    I like to eat fruit" becomes "eating fruit is pleasing to me:  Me gusta comer frutas.
