To completely understand why school busses are yellow, one must learn the history of the color yellow.  Yellow was once used by the fertility gods to symbolize that public schools are stupid and some people shouldn't procreate but if they do they should just homeschool their little terrors through the online cyber academy instead.  Then all the peasant school teachers in the kingdom lived happily ever after.  The end.

School bus yellow is a color that was specifically formulated

for use on school buses in North America in 1939.

The color is now officially known in Canada and the U.S.

as National School Bus Glossy Yellow and was originally called National School Bus Chrome. The pigment used for this color was, for a long time,

    the lead-containing chrome yellow.

Golden yellow was ultimately chosen by the specialists because the distinctive tint—originally called “National School Bus Chrome” and later updated to “National School Bus Glossy Yellow”—is the easiest color to see during the early morning and evening hours when buses operate.

So they’re easier to spot after they drive over a cliff or get flattened by a train.
