What is an alternative way to hang coats without using a nail?

I had put up a coat hanger on my wall, used screws to screw it in but after putting two, three sweaters on it the coat hanger keeps coming right off the wall. My walls are a little thin so I'm assuming that's why it won't hold too well. Any other ideas on how to secure it to the wall?

You either screw the screws into wall studs (the wood frame behind the wallboard) or you use a wall anchor or Molly bolt -- screws specifically designed for hanging heavy things that are not screwed into a stud.

Go to your local hardware store and talk to the folks.  The type of screw you need will also depend on the total weight it needs to hold.

A more attractive way to hang coats/sweaters is to get a "hall tree".  It is a piece of furniture that stands in a corner and has coat hooks on it.  If you can't do that, then get some "molly bolts" for your wall.  You need to check and see where the studs are.  You can't just hammer nails into sheet rock and not expect things of any weight to fall.

A chair with a high back and arms holds a lot of clothes just fine.

Seriously???? You either screw it into studs in the wall, or use wall anchors.

Have you never hung anything on a wall before???

Make sure the screws are going into wall studs or anchors.  Even one screw mounted correctly into a stud should hold several pounds of clothing.

Find the stud in the wall, and put a long screw in it.
