Is this wrong?

A retail employee making small talk with customers while ringing their items. It’s inappropriate?

    No its not wrong, some people like a 'chat' whilst 'checking out', some senior citizens appreciate the social interaction if they dont see many people during the day.

    Yes, you're not doing checkout in a timely manner, making other customers wait. Unless they are able to talk AS THEY WORK, in which case nothing is being held up.

    It’s usually fine. I had one commenting on my groceries (“I love this stuff!), holding them up for inspection before she scanned them. That was annoying. I don’t think her manager would approve.

    It's far from wrong. It's actually the right thing to do. I never kept any employees that couldn't converse with customers and make them feel at home. As a result my retail business thrived.

    Generally cashiers do make small talk - it's certainly not wrong, unless they are engaging in long drawn out conversations and holding up the line.
