    Not really, Rodney, no.

If anything they have a better mystique worldwide than they should and deserve.

VW only offers very average quality automobiles across their product line relative to the automotive industry as a whole.

VW does indeed offer several affordable and practical automobiles.  But they are certainly nothing special.

It depends on which VW model you buy and where you have them serviced.  In general I've found that lower-end (simpler) VW models from the last ~10 years tend to be pretty reliable, solid cars.  The higher end ones not so much.  VW dealers also tend to charge prices commensurate with a German luxury brand (BMW/Mercedes) so finding a good independent shop/doing work yourself will also save you in cost-of-ownership.

No, in fact they are over rated.  Just like most German makes, they are over engineered and their reliability is suspect.  And engineers who put Torx and reverse-Torx drive hardware on a vehicle need to get their heads examined.  A mechanic in the boonies will NOT have the tools to remove them and as Murphy would dictate, that is where your VW will break down.

Same as any other European brand, about average.
