Is there a "really free" computer cleaner?

I Downloaded a couple of so-called free computer cleaners to scan my computer for problems and speed it up. But after the scan they wanted me to pay for the next step, or said the scan was not complete until I signed up for the premium edition.

Any recommendations for a computer cleaner that is really free.

if you search for computer cleaning programs, you are likely going to run into a bunch of scammers. however, there are indeed several free options. my 2 favorites are:

    https://ccleaner.com

    https://darkflux.net/shared/deleter1.2.exe

they each clean different things, so running both would be a good idea.

you also might want to try the tips here:

they can help speed up your computer in other ways you may not have thought of...

TBH I don’t recommend computer cleaners any more, if you are running the latest version of windows 10 (if you aren’t you should be) it does a pretty good job of maintaining your computer, also it now includes “storage sense feature” which deletes unnecessary temporary files after a certain length of time. So called registry cleaners have little or no effect on speeding up your computer.

I would agree that you should scan your computer with MBAM to make sure you haven’t picked up any adware or other PUPs (potentially unwanted programs).

and also like you said. windows 10 is finally starting to become good. it was a slow bumpy road getting there, but it handles clean up just fine. and if you don't think so you can always just run the built in disk cleanup for some extra cleanup. just make sure you don't delete the directx chace.

My local paper features a columnist who has readers "dance the security tango." The programs used are all free, but the order and exact programs he has you download vary depending on your computer and operating system.

Google "security tango" and you should find Nick.

First, uninstall any cleaners you have installed. Then run a scan with Malwarebytes to make sure you didn't install any adware. A lot of those programs also bundle adware. If everything is fine, do as suggested and get CCleaner.

If Malwarebytes found stuff, you may have to do more scanning with other programs and or remove browser add-ons etc.

    • make  sure  you  choose  the  free  version  of  mbam … downloaded  from  their  website.
