What's a good cleaner for walls that won't strip away water based paint?

My parents are always looking for something to clean their kitchen walls really well.

Most of their time is spent in the kitchen smoking while watching tv. On top of that there's cooking meals that adds to the grim that builds up on the walls.

They try to keep the windows open and crack the door to try and get smoke and stuff from themselves and cooking out but the walls always end up dirty.

What's a good cleaner that will really get all that cigarette smoke and cooking grimed off the walls without a lot of scrubbing or strip the paint off?

Those Mr. Clean Eraser 'sponge' things are marketed for cleaning walls. They work well. Now that the patent has expired you can buy them for a lot less, even at the dollar store.

Well, you don't scrub.  Liquid dishsoap on a wet cloth and wipe.   The water based paint is Acrylic Latex(acrylic is a type of plastic) so it does not wash off that easy.  You have to do it daily.  You can't wash of cigarette smoke.  It is like a suntan on your skin.  It just don't come off. Dishsoap will take off cooking grease if you do a lot of deep frying....so oil smoke lands on the walls as grease.   TSP can be used, but it is harsher than soap on your hands.  It is mainly used before the walls are repainted over.

Probably the most effective and cheapest product is **** & Span. It has been used many years.

Ammonia. Vinegar. Windex. Dish soap. Any all-purpose cleaning solution. In other words, almost anything normally used to clean household surfaces will work. Don't use bleach! It will inevitably get on the floor, and on your clothing, and in any case bleach is not meant for general cleaning or removing grease.

BLEACH works most of the time
