Why does my father-in-law always use speaker phone when calling family and friends during holidays?

It is hard to hear conversations and the sports commentators.

I use it because it is easier to hear.

Some friends use it because of "Cancer Fear" from holding it too close to the head.

I also do the same just due to fear of radiation that could damage my ear.

Probably, if he is elderly, he probably has hearing loss in his ear that he uses for a phone. He needs both ears to hear. A lot of people who used the old land line telephones a lot have a hearing loss in the left ear. A right handed person would use the left hand to hold the phone to his left ear and write with his right.

Maybe the handset isn't loud enough for him to hear.
