My mother's memory is fading. We need to know if she has a life insurance policy. How do I find out?

Determine if she has a will, and who is the executor. Here will should have a list of assets. The life insurance policy should be listed. You would be interested in who is the beneficiary of the insurance policy. It does not have to be the children. If she does not have a will, this will be a problem in settling the estate. It will be settled in probate court. Often the will and life insurance documents will be held in a safety security box at the bank. You may be able to go to her bank and determine if she has a safety security box. However, without power of attorney or her key, the bank won't let you access the box.

Ask her when lucid.
Check her paperwork...bank accounts and transactions...if she has a policy, she would have been paying for it at some point.
Check with former employers to see what they may have offered as a benefit and how to track.
You can try the MIB...but if the policy is too old...might not be in their database.

Ask her during a lucid moment.

You don't need to know until she is dead. I don't think she would appreciate your nosying around her things.

You're on the internet, there are steps you can take.
Visit NAIC.org and you can find your state's insurance department's contact information. While you're there check out their free policy locator tool. If your loved one had a life insurance policy and you're the beneficiary, the NAIC may be able to find the information and share it with you.

The insurers will search their records to see if any life insurance policies are in the name of the deceased. If so, the life insurance companies will contact you if you're the beneficiary or deceased person's legal representative or executor. ... Forward you to that state's policy locator service, if it has one.

look through her payment history and her records.

Ask her attorney.
Ask whomever has been in charge of helping her in recent months/years (memory doesn't fade overnight).
Ask her where her important papers are.
Ask her if she has a safety deposit box.
If she has a life insurance policy, someone's been paying the bill. Ask to see her bank statements or checking account register.
Is there some reason you think she would have a life insurance policy? It's a waste of money if she has no dependents who rely on her for financial support.
Is she still mentally competent? If yes, you better get on top of financial power of attorney, health care power of attorney, advanced directive and a will if that's not already done.

1) Look through her paperwork.
2) Contact her Insurance Agent.
Chances are, she does not. Most people do not as it is quite expensive.

Ask her or just take one out on her yourself!
