Because there is such a huge variety of music, people have varied taste in music, and the Internet makes music from around the world accessible. Because of the accessibility, people can listen to their very specific taste in music, and there is a lot more music out there to sift through to find what you like. I think there are "bigger than life" QUALITY rock bands, but they haven't achieved the same level of popularity as the ones you mentioned. I think the main two reasons are different music tastes and a lot of people just aren't aware of their existence.

There are like a million bands now and they're all highly skilled, it's impossible without the mainstream hype machine for any of them to come out on top.

Instead you have every band competing for the dwindling attention span of a very specific segment of music listeners, their niche demographic.

People aren't into Rock anymore, sadly. Also, the world wants more relate-able people, so the bigger than life dream gets cast aside as purely fake.

Rolling Stones and Metallica are still around. Not sure what qualifies as "bigger than life."
