To have a gold AMEX card, you must have a strong credit score, and be able to pay off the balance every month.

Truly wealthy people get a bog standard green Amex card.  Not only because it is very poor taste to flaunt wealth but also because the benefits that come with the more expensive cards are all a waste of money.  That is also why the truly wealthy drive around in beaten up old cars and wear shirts with frayed collars.
