There are many different species of bat, over 1,200. The earliest fossil remains of the bat date back more than 52 million years. They were found in 2003 in Wyoming, United States.

The species is thought to have began about 50 million years ago or older. Some believe they evolved from early rodent mammals. Bat populations are dwindling due to  fungal disease ( Pennsylvania), other disease and loss of habitat.
