Doctors and nurses have to be paid for their direct services. X-ray Techs and Radiologists have to be paid for taking X-rays and ultrasounds, and interpreting the results.  Hospitals have to be paid for caring for you while you're a patient in a hospital and taking up space in one of their beds. Hospital Food Service has  to be paid for preparing your meals and delivering your food to you, and Hospital Janitors have to be paid for cleaning your room and changing your sheets every day. Hospital labs have to be paid for running tests on blood work and for pathology on biopsies.  Researches and drug companies have to be paid for developing medications to treat you.

None of that comes cheap, and it all adds up.

I work in healthcare, family practice.

Been in health care since 1973 (46 years)

There are providers who rely more on tests, MRI's, CT scans etc. instead of taking a history and doing a good physical exam. This is extremely wasteful and dangerous.

The biggest waste is from folks themselves. Coming in for colds, hang overs, feeling tired after playing all night, work/school excuses, parking permits, companion dogs and cats, etc.etc.etc

Providers will see them, and send a big bill to Medicare/Medicaid/Welfare etc.

    Waste!!

o Risk.  Doctors and hospitals and pharmaceutical companies get sued all the time.

o Reward.  Doctors complain that they are 25% overworked, they start life late because the education phase lasts so long, and they graduate with a tremendous amount of student debt.  They want to be rewarded for all those things.

o Greed.  There's an increasing population of "hospital administrators" and "medical coders" and others like that.

o "Insurance" money.  Whenever there's more money around to pay for something, the price goes up.

o Your money or your life.  When you're having a medical emergency, you don't do a whole lot of comparison shopping.

It's not expensive, actually. You need to point to which part of it is the expensive part.

Because they need to get money somehow

Because we went from a free market system to a system run by the government.  Everything they get involved in gets screwed up.  Plus politicians have this thing called "lobbying", which IMHO is nothing but legal bribery.  And why is this in entertainment and music category?
