1 year for Army, just like the rest of us. They just don’t leave the gate.

They can send them over for a year of they want. Six months back home then they can be sent again.

Army deployments to combat zones are 9 months.  JAG officers are usually assigned to BN or higher.

Deployments for division and corps HQ are 12 months -- HOWEVER, individuals will be rotated out at 9-11 months to ensure they don't hit 12 months which would entitle them to a 2-week non chargeable leave.

Most Navy and AF deployments to combat zones are 6 months.

Lawyers WILL deploy to combat zones.  In addition to advising commanders, assisting in legal matters, and supporting Soldiers, they are also attached to units to advise lawyers, judges, and police in re-establishing Rule of Law.

Source(s): For combat arms that is true. PRT is a BN level and has JAG officers. CA and PSYOP have JAG officers at BN level.

There is no such term as "combat rotation."

Each service has its own deployment vulnerability schedules.  An Army lawyer would most likely deploy with their unit.  Most Air Force lawyers would deploy in small teams since someone has to stay behind at home station to keep things going.  Most Airmen are on a cycle of being vulnerable for 6 months and not for 12, but some career fields are different.  Just because someone is vulnerable for a deployment doesn't mean that they will deploy.

A lawyer could deploy to Afghanistan and be outside the wire often advising the Afghans on running a legal system.  A deployed lawyer could also be sitting in an air conditioned office in Qatar shuffling paperwork for CENTCOM.

A JAG lawyer is not a combatant nor warfighter. Despite what that God Awful TV show portrayed.

Under the law of armed conflict,  lawyers are lawful combatants.   They just aren't front line troops.
