When I was in high school, my CPK levels were over 5,000, and I was admitted to the ICU. Why would they admit me to the ICU for that?

Those are muscle enzymes that can clog up your kidney, leading to failure and the need for dialysis.

When the total CPK level is very high, it most often means there has been injury or stress to muscle tissue, the heart, or the brain. Muscle tissue injury is most likely. When a muscle is damaged, CPK leaks into the bloodstream. ... Detect dermatomyositis, polymyositis, and other muscle diseases.
