Why did August Wilson incorporate the poem "Thanatopsis" into the play just before Citizen heads to the City of Bones?

Why did Solly share this poem with Citizen? What relevance does it have to the City of Bones? What is the  significance of the word "unfaltering" being in italics in the play when Eli says it? Please help, for homework
