From a psychological perspective, if you can, try to find the root of the problem. Find what event is causing this or identify the triggers, if any, that cause you to have these negative thoughts. From there you can learn how to respond when the triggers show up along with being able to change thoughts in your head as to not get too fixated on the negative.

I try and find something to do that really requires concentration. But if that doesn't work, I have a good cry and start over.

The inner world isn't as simply modified. You can remove something from your environment, but you can't remove a past traumatic memory. It always resides within. The way I think you can modify it, is by expanding your awareness of it, so you think differently about it. Best done with therapy.
