How dangerous is Pakistan's new uranium tipped Gatling gun shells to Indian aircraft?

In an ingenious and cost saving move. Pakistan's military now has radioactive Gatling gun shells to shoot down jet aircraft and armor. Given each troop can carry in a rucksack 10,000 shells with unlimited mobility and lots of fire power could this be a game changer?

    Depleted uranium shells have been used for years against armor.  But I don't know why they would be needed against aircraft??  You don't really need extra punch to bring these down.  I suspect heat seeking missiles are much more effective.  Think Stingers.    

    Gatling guns consume huge amounts of ammo.  You really need trucks to haul this supply around.  Unless you want your infantry to only be concerned with the air threat, using them as ammo humpers is probably not advised.  Or even practical.

    Depleted uranium, or DU, has been used for military firearms for decades: its mass adds a huge punch on impact and it also ignites on impact to send molten metal through armour plating like a hot knife through butter. It’s far from being a new idea.

    But no no footsoldier could carry anything like 10,000 rounds, especially so if they were DU rounds. A standard round of 7.62mm AK47 ammo weighs 16.3g. So 10,000 rounds of that weighs 163kg (about 360 pounds).

    DU is radioactive, but not to a huge extent as the type of radiation it produces can mostly be stopped by skin alone. But it’s the powder dust from spent DU rounds which can cause serious health problems if inhaled or swallowed. Not only does that allow radiation into your body, but DU itself is chemically toxic to your body just like most heavy metals but more so.

    DU is also not cheap, so it definitely would not be “cost-saving” to manufacture and stock such rounds on a routine basis.

    Check your facts before posting nonsense.

    Listen people:

    Depleted Uranium does not mean "not radioactive"...

    It just means "not useful for energy or bomb production".

    Depleted Uranium rounds ARE dangerously radioactive if in close and prolonged contact with a person.  If Pakistan allows their soldiers to carry them in a rucksack, of all places, they are consigning them to cancer.

      I never claimed it’s not radioactive. But the radioactivity is low and is overwhelmingly  Alpha particles which can be stopped by thin tissue paper. To a lesser extent it emits Beta particles which also do not penetrate deeply (about 1cm in flesh) and there’s a little Gamma radiation.

    The radiation of uranium tipped shells is minimal. It is the density of the depleted uranium that is important for penetrating metal airframes.

    I highly doubt those are radioactive. Probably DU shells, same as the US used in the gulf war. Still quite nasty, as Uranium is also a highly poisonous heavy metal.

    Reason for the DU shells is mainly their high density.
