Is it normal for Julian Assange to be kept in jail for so long for skipping bail by claiming asylum?

He's now considered a flight risk and can be held in jail until his trial.

He skipped bail, then surrendered himself, and then was arrested and jailed for skipping bail. The bit in the middle where he went all Howard Hughes in the Ecuadorian Embassy is immaterial. Now he's being kept in jail due to his "history of absconding" while the legal process of his extradition to USA is worked out. It all makes perfect sense and I'm glad of it. He's a self-serving nobody.
