i have been knitting close to five years now. i like to play with my knitting. modifying it. is a detachable scarf a good idea?
So i was asked to do a hat with a scarf attached to it for someone. I was thinking if i can make it attachable and deattachable it would work better? If i make the scarf wide enough it would work. All i would have to do is put buttons on it and little button holders on the end of the hat. (inside of it) that way the person can only use the hat and not the scarf but feel free to use the scarf if need be.

Sounds like a good idea. Just make the buttons small so they don't irritate the neck area

A scarf wouldn't normally be attached to a hat. A hat sits on top of the head and doesn't end at the neck, normally, so the scarf would be hanging in the air above the persons shoulders. Perhaps you're thinking about a hood, or a saggy beanie type of headcovering that ends at the neckline. In that case, you could certainly make a detachable scarf.
But if the person asked for a hat with attached scarf, I'd show them patterns of a hood and scarf, and ask if that was what they were thinking of. They might really want what they described.
There are lots of free patterns on ravelry.com (and plenty for sale, too).
Here are a few free patterns I found on ravelry:
