I'll answer this way. Societal expectations has conditioned most women to have a man provided for them but that doesn't mean these women are going to chase down every man they see. Women know that a man will expect her to show some value for what he provides, so they're selective in who they pursue. When it comes to pair-bonding both parties want the best available option. That's just human nature.
