Are you allowed to eat pickled herring right out of the jar, or do you have to cook it first?

If you are the only one in the house that eats them you can eat them right out of the jar.

If others eat them use a fork to remove some, place in a bowl and eat.

The herring are already prepared and ready for eating.

Straight out the jar is fine, they've been pickled / soused like roll mops.

Just open the lid and enjoy the fishy briny goodness.

You eat it right out of the jar cold.  Do not heat it.

That’s the only way I eat it.

I have been eating it for over 40 years.

Cooking it is not recommended it would not taste good and it would smell up the house
