While the two languages have a common root (along with Italian, Latin and classic Greek), and have a lot of words in common, they are two different languages.

English has a lot of words and grammar rules in common with German (from which it evolved), but they are two different languages.

As someone who speaks a fair amount of Spanish and has also tried to get around Brazil, I can assure you they are not.

They are both Romance languages and have a lot of commonalities that can be figured out, but they are definitely not the same.  Not in vocabulary and not in pronunciation.
