It is called gaslighting because it was seen in a 1944 film called Gaslight.

It is a way for one person to manipulate things so that the other person starts to question reality and thinks they are going mad.

it's making someone doubt their own thoughts and experiences so the gaslight-er can have more control in the relationship. make someone think they're crazy so you can be the "sane" one.

Person A is manipulating person B and acting in some unfavorable mental disposition towards them. Person B calls out person A for their behavior and person A attempts to make it seem like person B is crazy and imagining things.

Basically, it's an overused word that gained popularity in the last 2 or 3 years that wanna be intelligent sounding women use to accuse every man of gas lighting them when dissecting relationship psycho babble.

There really is no difference between gaslighting and any other method of influencing others. People use "fancy words" to mystify "gaslighting" as a way of acting like it is somehow worse that what they're currently doing. But in the end, changing someone's ideology requires doubt.

Source(s): Seriously, come up with a way to change someone's ideology that doesn't first require them to cast doubt on the history of what said person has learned? That doesn't require looking at the past from a different perspective and influencing memories? It doesn't exist... you NEED to gaslight someone to influence them, but you don't call it that unless it is your opponent doing it.

It's a form of mental abuse where a person tries to convince someone else that their own perceptions and memories are inaccurate. For example, several months ago when Trump told his supporters not to believe what they see and hear he was gaslighting them. The name comes from an old movie where in a husband tries to drive his wife crazy

So you're saying you have an eidetic memory? Gaslighting doesn't exist, it was made up by people who wanted to insult people for using the same methods they would use to influence others.

It's what Donald Trump is doing to America!

It's a form of emotional abuse where you cause the victim to question their own sanity by constantly doubting them and questioning them and lying to them.

Basically, using underhanded tactics to make you doubt what you think is true.

It comes from an old play and movie called "Gaslight" where a greedy husband starts moving objects around (and denying it) to convince his wealthy wife that she is going mad.

Yes, there is.  Look at the source of the expression.  You don't think the husband character used underhanded tactics?  You think that is the normal course of trying to convince someone of the something?
