    I'm not sure what you mean by "professional and meaningful".  As a historian, I can assure you that professional historians simply use "slavery," which carries all of the "meaning" necessary.

    If want a definition, slavery is the practice of regarding human beings as property, who can be owned, bought, sold, detained at will, and compelled to labor, without compensation, for the owner.  This is sometimes referred to as "chattel slavery" rather than just slavery.
