    The ratio of time in car and boat is 5:1 (boat being the longest)

    5 + 1 = 6 parts

    1 part = 12/6 = 2 hours = time in car

    5 parts = 2 x 5 = 10 hours = time on boat

    There was 10 - 2 = 8 hours more spent on the boat.

    Let the time spent in the boat by "t".

    Then, t+t/5 = 12,

    t = 10 hours.

  • Let v be speed

    Car: 5v

    Boat: v

    t(car) = d/v = d/5v

    t(boat) = d/v = d/v

    Well, you can just look at the question and conclude the answer is 5x (ans = 60 hours)
