Why don't families have a lot of children like in the old days anymore?

In the 1950s it was common for families to have 4-8 children.

I've mentioned this before, but it's often called "the curse of affluence."

As societies make large gains economically and their largest segment.....the middle and working classes...get to enjoy more wealth, cultural focus shifts away from family and community and more towards materialism and personal gain...

At the same time, this shift creates more pressure on the individual to attain those trappings of wealth and continuously feed that material need...This creates a "live to work" mentality and debt cycles that creates a good amount of stress at an age where our parents and grandparents were already starting families.

By the time many today reach their prime parenting years they are either too "burned out," too heavily in debt or just emotionally unable to commit themselves to the kind of relationship that might produce more than one or two children.

I think there are more opportunities and ambitions that people have now, way back in the day for example, women were only really expected to cook and clean and have kids, now there's so much more to do and starting a family isn't as prioritised

It just costs to much now. In the past the more children you had, the more wealthy you would be cause you could put them to work and they would take care of you in old age. Now kids will drain all the money you ever make and when you get old, you'll just be left forgotten as they live their own lives.

And then in the 1960's birth control pills came available.

Most of us don't live on farms anymore, and using birth control isn't an automatic trip to Hell nowadays. For most religions anyways.
