A mass of cold air blew down from the Arctic Circle. 71% of North America has had unusual coldness from last Monday till Thursday.

Warm air in the western US has been pushing northward. That pushes the polar vortex up to the north. As if in compensation, the polar vortex got pushed southward over the central and eastern portions of the country. It's now pretty much back to normal.
