Why are attacks against our MP’s taken very seriously ?

In 2010, Labour Stephen Timms was attacked in what they would call was an “attempted assignation” - his attacker, a 21 year old female, student, was jailed for life (minimum 15 years). I actually thought “oh it’s just a little silly attack, she would probably get 5 years or something and serve just two”.

A few years, later we had the Jo Cox Case, where she was murdered and the attacker received full life term.

Because they put themselves out there in the public eye and the last thing we want to do is discourage people from being MPs.  Would you want to be one if you knew it meant being attacked?
