Is a soft scalp normal?

My 12 year old daughter usually wear two ponytails. I rubbed my finger down the middle if her head, and she said it hurt. She pointed towards the top of her head. When I felt that area, it was soft. Not super soft, but softer than the rest of her scalp. I never noticed it before, and not sure how looking the soft spot was there. I'm just concerned now.
